What is aerating? Follow

Aerating is the process of using a tool to create holes or slits in the lawn.  This allows better drainage, removes a small amount of the stubborn thatch and other organic weeds and debris that can build up and lets more water, air and nutrients circulate in the roots of the lawn, leading to better, healthier growth. 
 
Aerating is a very important tasks for any lawn enthusiast and, in some circumstances, vital if you want a lush, healthy and good quality lawn
 
This is necessary for many reasons. For example, when a lawn has become compacted from heavy use or because the soil is dense and clay-like, this means the air and water cannot circulate properly and can lead to brown spots or an unhealthy looking lawn.
 
Also, some lawns are on slopes, meaning they lose some of the water they should get from the rain or from watering. On these circumstances, aerating helps more water penetrate the lawn. 
 
Aerating can be carried out by means of a rake or a garden fork, but this work is time consuming and laborious and can create or exacerbate physical problems such as back strain. Added to this it can be inefficient unless you are meticulous about your coverage of the lawn. The alternatives are easy to use and efficient mechanical aerators. 
 
There are a number of different types of aerator, they can be propelled by hand, powered by petrol or mains electricity and, increasingly, Lithium-ion batteries.
 
There are two major styles or types.

1. Solid Tine Aerators
2. Hollow Tine Aerators

Solid tine aerators cuts or push holes into the lawn using either spikes that create round holes, or blades that create slits.

Hollow tine aerators also create holes, but since each tine is hollow, they also pull out a small core of the lawn as they exit the lawn, the holes are larger and more material is removed.

Hollow tine aerators are generally considered to be the most effective as they remove more thatch, allow for more aeration and irrigation to take place.when soil compaction is very severe, hollow tine aerators are probably thew better solution. For light compaction and a more temporary solution, solid tine aerators are usually adequate.
